In the ever-changing world of music, emerging Canadian artist TGEStephy, also known as Stephane Tshishimbi, is a name you need to know. A performer, rapper, and member of the well-known Montreal-based collective, The Grey Era (TGE), TGEStephy has proven that his musical talents are boundless.
Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, TGEStephy’s musical journey began later in his life, blossoming in 2019 while he was living in Florida on a football scholarship. Though his early years revolved around sports, it was during this period that he discovered his passion for music, a revelation that led him to join forces with his labelmates TGETruth, TGEMarx, TGEWatts, and TGEQuon. Together, they have accumulated over 200K streams across all platforms, mostly due to their viral 2021 song ‘Birkin.’ Individually, TGEStephy has over 65K streams with only three releases.
This multi-faceted artist’s versatility is evidenced in tracks ranging from afro-swing melodies like “4X4” to his most recent release, “Too Much.” The Grey Era’s rapid rise to prominence led to a coveted interview at Montreal’s biggest hip-hop radio stations, LeWarmUp FM. The group’s accomplishments include reaching over 100K streams in less than 3 months with their song ‘Birkin.’ They’ve opened for renowned artists such as Smiley, Dave East, and Afroman.
But TGEStephy’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Struggling to find his sound and stay true to himself, he relied on the support and encouragement from his TGE brothers. Balancing his music career with an active football scholarship at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presented its own challenges.
A documentary released in 2021 by Apex Visual Productions explored this interesting dynamic. TGEStephy’s wisdom and self-awareness resonate as he shares lessons about being true to oneself, especially in a profession where audience opinions matter. His upcoming summer single “Start Over,” set to release on August 18th, is a testament to his connection with his audience, as it came together due to overwhelming demand on social media. With plans for a national and international tour and a 7-song EP called “Jaded,” TGEStephy’s future is looking bright.
Follow his journey on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. TGEStephy’s story, of an athlete turned musician, an artist staying true to his passion, and a performer ready to take on the world, offers inspiration for anyone daring to follow their dreams.
